Dealing with Teenage Eczema

Your teenage years may seem like the worst time of your life. Harder classes, extra-curricular activities, love interests… puberty. On top of all of that, are you also dealing with eczema?

First of all, you’re not alone — according to the National Eczema Association, nearly 10 million people under the age of 18 have some form of eczema.

Whether you’ve continuously dealt with eczema since childhood, experience random flare-ups or are noticing symptoms for the first time, everyone experiences eczema differently. And as a teenager, you already have enough on your plate to worry about.

As a child, we are pretty much at the discretion of our parents to look after our skin. Some parents use a proactive approach and lather us up every chance they get. Tips for Dealing with Teenage Eczema

  1. Start a Daily Routine
  2. Gaining control is the most important step you can take for yourself. To start with, commit to a daily skin care routine of bathing in lukewarm water followed by a moisturizer. Since keeping your skin moisturized is key, it is beneficial to lotion up 2-3 times a day. There are numerous over-the-counter drugs and moisturizers that target eczema, many of which you can learn about here. Remember, if you let your skin get dry it will itch, you will scratch, and be back to square one.

    It also helps to get in the habit of checking your nails each day, to ensure they are clean and short, which can prevent damage caused by intentional or unintentional scratching. And as always, follow your doctor’s or dermatologist’s directions regarding other skin care recommendations and consistently take prescribed medications. The sooner you can get into a routine, the easier it will be for you to manage your eczema.

  3. Know Your Skin
  4. What triggers an itching cycle for you? Knowing what triggers your eczema can allow you to stop it in its tracks. If you can avoid situations and substances that stress your skin, take the extra step to do so. Don’t be afraid to ask for a seat away from a sunny window or cover yourself up if direct sunlight causes a flare-up. You’ll thank yourself later.

  5. Stay Active
  6. Getting involved in extracurricular activities, such as athletics, is a huge part of high school but also a great way to get your mind off the itch. Even if sweat tends to affect your eczema, exercise is still crucial to your health and well-being. If certain activities aggravate your eczema, such as playing soccer in the grass, consider joining activities and teams that won’t harm your skin – try walking, bike riding, yoga, or another sport that keeps your skin cool and dry while you work out.

  7. Girls, Don’t Be Afraid of Makeup
  8. For girls, the teenage years are also a time for experimenting with makeup. This is already a learning experience, and no girl wants their eczema flare up to mess with their freshly contoured face. Psoriasis sufferers often ask our physicians, “What are some of the best foods to eat for psoriasis patients?” The answer is not cut-and-dry, as there’s no concrete scientific evidence that links specific foods to psoriasis. However, dermatologists, physicians and nutritionists all agree that a healthy, balanced diet is strongly recommended for any patient. Reason being, the food we put into our bodies is directly linked to our health and well-being.

Eating a healthy diet that consists of lean proteins, whole grains, fruits and vegetables — avoiding processed and fried foods whenever possible — can help lower your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. This is especially important for psoriasis sufferers, as the risks of these ailments are higher in patients with psoriasis.


The Best Foods for Psoriasis Sufferers

While every patient is different, we recommend that our psoriasis patients try their best to adhere to a diet that is rich in the following foods. While doing so certainly will not cure the disease, it may help reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks.

    1. Fruits and vegetables
    2. According to Harvard Health, the following foods have been shown to help fight chronic inflammation:

      • Fruits, such as strawberries, blueberries, apples, oranges and cherries
      • Leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, collard greens and others
      • Hearty vegetables, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, avocados and squash
      • Legumes, such as beans, lentils and chickpeas

      These foods are recommended because they contain high levels of natural antioxidants and polyphenols, which are protective compounds found in plants. Studies have shown that antioxidants and polyphenols play a role in the reduction of inflammation in the body, which is something that is of particular importance to psoriasis sufferers.

    3. Nuts and grains
    4. According to Mayo Clinic, eating nuts as part of a healthy diet may be good for your heart. While there’s no conclusive evidence stating that eating nuts can reduce the risk of early death due to heart disease, it’s generally believed that nuts can be good for heart health because they contain the following heart-healthy substances:

      • Unsaturated fats, AKA “the good kind of fat”
      • Omega-3 fatty acids, which are often found in fish
      • Fiber, which can help lower your cholesterol
      • Vitamin E, which may help stop the development of plaques in your arteries
      • Plant sterols, which can help lower your cholesterol
      • L-arginine, which may help improve your arteries

      While a lot of these ingredients focus on the health of the heart, it’s worth noting that they can also have anti-inflammatory benefits. Plus, who doesn’t want a healthy heart? In addition to nuts, grains can be a great addition to a psoriasis patient’s diet because they are high in fiber. Plus, like the fruits and vegetables outlined above, they often contain a variety of anti-inflammatory antioxidants.

    5. Lean meats and fish
    6. In general, eating lean white meat like turkey and chicken is recommended as part of a nutritious diet. If you do eat red meat, try to stick to lean cuts, avoiding fattier meats and cuts. Harvard Health also says that certain red meats can cause inflammation, including burgers, steaks, hot dogs and sausage.

      Additionally, fish is a great addition to your diet. Take this Healthline article, for example, which outlines 11 Evidence-Based Health Benefits of Eating Fish. In a nutshell, eating fish is recommended because:

      • Fish contain high concentrations of important nutrients, like high-quality protein, Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals
      • Fish oils are thought to reduce inflammation and support the immune system, which operates in overdrive for psoriasis patients
      • Eating fish may help lower your risk of heart attack and stroke

National Psoriasis Foundation Honors New Jersey Dermatologist with Excellence in Leadership Award

Dr. Jerry Bagel Recognized for Decades of Psoriasis Research, Treatment

EAST WINDSOR, N.J. – May 9, 2018 – Dr. Jerry Bagel, an internationally recognized expert in the treatment of psoriasis and founder of Windsor Dermatology and Psoriasis Treatment Center of Central New Jersey, will receive the Excellence in Leadership Award from the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) next month.

Dr. Bagel’s commitment to the NPF mission to drive efforts to cure psoriatic disease and improve the lives of those affected will be celebrated at the Commit to Cure Gala on June 7 at Tribeca Rooftop, 2 Desbrosses St., New York City.

For more than 30 years, Dr. Bagel has worked toward curing psoriasis and helping people who suffer from the sometimes debilitating, even deadly, skin condition.

He is a five-term member of the NPF Medical Board, and he founded the NPF President’s Council, which has raised more than $1 million for psoriasis research. NPF previously awarded Dr. Bagel its inaugural Outstanding Physician-Clinician award.

I’m in awe of this honor,” Dr. Bagel said. “Throughout my career, I’ve been passionate about the study and treatment of psoriasis for the benefit of my patients, and it is truly humbling to receive this award that recognizes my dedication and contributions toward a cure.

Dr. Bagel has become a world-renowned expert on psoriasis and speaks to international audiences. He has published more than 150 articles, participated in more than 200 clinical trials and is sought after to peer-review psoriasis articles for numerous dermatologic journals.

He is the senior attending physician at the University Medical Center of Princeton, an editor of Practical Dermatology and associate editor of the NPF peer-reviewed scientific journal, the Journal of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis.

Board-certified in dermatology, Dr. Bagel is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and co-chair of the Psoriasis Expert Resource Group. In 2016, the AAD awarded Dr. Bagel its Presidential Citation for his “significant contributions and dedication to promoting excellence in psoriasis research.”

Spider veins are not limited to your legs either. Some individuals experience spider veins on their nose and cheeks (caused by sun exposure) or on their abdomen. Spider veins are most common in women because they are triggered by female hormones.

How do you treat spider veins?

If your spider veins aren’t causing any discomfort, you may not need to seek treatment. Many of our patients contact us about treatment options because they are embarrassed by how the lines look and they no longer want to expose their legs during warm months. Proper treatment of the veins can minimize their appearance or make them disappear entirely.

While there are several steps you can take at home to help with spider veins including changing your diet, wearing compression socks, elevating your feet, applying concealer or self-tanning lotion, and, of course, wearing clothes that cover them completely, we often recommend sclerotherapy to our patients.

What is sclerotherapy?

The Sclerotherapy procedure is a spider vein treatment where a dermatologist injects a salt solution into the impacted vein. The salt solution causes the blood vessel to swell and the blood to clot. After two to three months, the vessel becomes scar tissue and fades from being noticeable on your skin.

Sclerotherapy is a relatively painless procedure. You can expect to feel a pinch when the injection occurs, and there is a possibility of some minor bruising and discomfort afterward. You should wear compression socks to help with the healing process. You should also avoid strenuous exercise or aerobics for up to a week after the procedure, but you can take slow walks to help increase the blood flow and the healing time.
