Pediatric DermatologistPediatric Dermatology focuses on evaluating, treating, and managing skin problems in pediatric patients. Our pediatric dermatologist see patients from birth through 18 years old.

At Schweiger Dermatology Group, our providers provide comprehensive dermatology care and consider the psychological and developmental effects that skin issues might have on this tender age group.

Common Pediatric Skin Concerns

Children face different skin conditions than adults. The most common skin problems we see in children include:

  • Acne
  • Allergic Reactions
  • Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
  • Birthmarks
  • Bullous Diseases
  • Herpes Simplex
  • Molluscum Contagiosum (viral skin infection)
  • Milia
  • Port Wine Stains
  • Psoriasis
  • Warts and Moles

Parents also seek our advice on healthy skincare rituals for their children, including the proper way to apply sunscreen, tips on healing dry skin, and acne-fighting regimens. We often partner with parents to ensure their children establish smart and safe skincare habits at a young age.

Pediatric Acne

As a sign of the times, our pediatric dermatology providers see an increase in pediatric acne cases. This influx of pediatric acne cases may be due to children hitting puberty earlier than previous generations.

At Schweiger Dermatology Group, our pediatric dermatologists offer several safe ways to treat pediatric acne, including topical prescription medications, oral antibiotics, and laser and light therapy.

Pediatric Acne Before Adolescence

Some children start to see acne outbreaks as early as age 8. Early acne can usually be spotted on and around the nose and then spreads to the forehead, cheeks, and chin as the condition worsens. Acne may first appear as red bumps (papules), closed whiteheads, or open blackheads.

Remember that almost every child gets acne on their way to adolescence and early treatment can stop the problem from worsening.

Pediatric Eczema

Pediatric eczema (atopic dermatitis) is another common skin issue that affects one in 10 children. Eczema causes dry, red, itchy skin, and can appear as a red-colored rash on the face, scalp, forehead, the inside of the elbow, and the back of the knees. It can occur in babies as well as school-age children. When children itch their skin, it causes a rash and can potentially lead to the formation of thick brown patches.

Although there is no cure for eczema, our pediatric dermatology providers offer effective treatment regimens to help parents manage the problem and keep their children’s skin as itch-free as possible.

Prevalence of Eczema in Children

Up to 30% of all young children develop eczema, most within the first year. Additionally, 60% of babies with eczema are likely to have the condition as adults. As a parent, you probably want to start getting treatment early for your child.

About Schweiger Dermatology Group

Schweiger Dermatology Group was founded to help make excellent dermatology care accessible throughout the Northeast. In 2010, Dr. Eric Schweiger started the practice with a single location in Midtown Manhattan. When he saw the need for high-quality dermatology care that did not require weeks or months of waiting to see a qualified provider, his vision of a multi-location practice was born.
