Botox 101

Botox has become a popular trend across the United States for its anti-aging properties. The benefits of Botox go beyond reducing wrinkles; there are quite a few reasons to consider utilizing Botox.

  • Low cost. Botox typically costs less than other methods for reducing wrinkles.
  • Quick process. Compared to a facelift where patients are under anesthesia for three hours, a Botox injection takes about 10 minutes.
  • No recovery. Receiving a Botox injection requires no recovery time. You are free to continue with your life. Recovering from a facelift typically takes at least one to two weeks.
  • Minimal side effects. Sometimes, people receiving Botox experience minor bruising or swelling. However, the side effects are significantly reduced if Botox is administered in a clinical setting.
  • Temporary. If for some reason you decide that you do not like Botox, the effect wears off. All you need to do is stop receiving the injection. Other methods of reducing wrinkles are difficult to reverse.
  • Wrinkle reduction. After the temporary injection wears off, many patients see a reduction in the visibility of their wrinkles.

Botox is also used to treat a variety of other ailments, including:

  • Lazy eye. Botox is able to lift the brow and lid above a lazy eye, thus reducing its appearance.
  • Hyperhidrosis. Botox helps seal sweat glands and reduces the production of sweat.

The Future of Psoriasis Treatment

Psoriasis is a non-contagious, chronic skin condition that affects 7.5 million people in America. It is the nation’s most prevalent immunological disease. Although there is no cure for psoriasis, many effective treatments are available. Over the past 10 years, psoriasis treatments have improved tremendously.

During the 1960s and 70s several psoriasis treatments were discovered. Among the treatments were corticosteroids, cyclosporine, and methotrexate. Despite the discovery of many effective treatments, the following decades consisted of no new discoveries. Recently, that has changed and there have been breakthroughs in psoriasis treatment.

Specifically, biologic agents have been manufactured to block a part of the immune system that causes psoriasis. The agents work by suppressing white blood cells, blocking TNF-alpha and interleukins, and binding proteins that cause the inflammation. During clinical trials, the biologic agents proved to be effective in the majority of people.

Since 1985 our Medical Director, Dr. Bagel, has been at the forefront of psoriasis patient care, treatment and clinical research. The Psoriasis Treatment Center of Central New Jersey and Windsor Dermatology is one of the most respected clinical settings in America for psoriasis treatment.

We utilize a few methods to reduce the effect of psoriasis. Among the treatment options are ultraviolet light therapy, biologic therapies, and oral medications. Before deciding on a treatment plan, our talented team of board certified dermatologists will consider the location and severity of involvement along with medical history. CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is taking the nation by (ice) storm. This procedure is a non-invasive alternative to liposuction. CoolSculpting became FDA-cleared for the treatment of fat for the flanks in 2010, the abdomen in 2012, thighs in 2014, and the chin in 2015. The procedure is quick and patients can expect to resume their daily activities immediately. Learn why the nation is obsessed with this treatment.

How does CoolSculpting work?

CoolSculpting works by suctioning your skin and freezing fat cells through the application of cooling panels. With the most advanced technology on the market, some areas are treated in as little as 35 minutes and discomfort is minimal. Most patients are able to complete work during the procedure or take a nap. CoolSculpting is not meant to replace liposuction, however, it can be used for someone looking for minor body improvements.

How long will the results last?

The treatment is not meant to be a massive weight-loss procedure. CoolSculpting is useful for patients who lead a healthy lifestyle and have some areas on their body that don’t change with healthy eating and exercise. To experience the best results, it is suggested that you receive at least two treatments. CoolSculpting can be permanent if you maintain a healthy diet and exercise regime. If you do not change anything related to diet and exercise, you will gain the weight back.

Where can I get CoolSculpting?

We are happy to announce that we have a CoolSculpting machine! We have an excellent team of six board certified dermatologists that takes pride in their work and strives for the highest quality care. Contact us today to schedule an appointment and learn more about the services we offer.

Laser Hair Removal Benefits

You’ve tried everything to get rid of unwanted hair, yet nothing has given you the long-lasting impact you desire. Laser hair removal might be the answer to your problem. The FDA approved hair removal lasers in 1997. Since then, it has grown to become one of the most common cosmetic procedures in America.

Several variations of the laser hair removal device are available. No matter the device used, the same basic technology is applied. Laser hair removal works by penetrating each strand of unwanted hair directly to the roots. This damages the hair follicle and prevents it from growing new hair. There are many benefits to laser hair removal, including:

  • The lasers used during the process are able to target coarse hairs without damaging the surrounding skin.
  • Laser hair removal is a fast and effective process. Each pulse takes a fraction of a second and is able to treat multiple hairs. Smaller areas can be treated in less than a minute, while larger areas can take up to an hour.
  • It takes about three to seven sessions for patients to notice permanent hair loss.

If you choose to undergo laser hair removal, you will need to stop plucking and waxing for six weeks before the first treatment. In addition, you should avoid sun exposure before and after the treatment. Laser hair removal is able to provide you with longer lasting results than traditional methods of hair removal.

Best Practice Tips: Removing Skin Tags

Have you noticed tiny growths on your skin? Do you often find yourself picking at them or wishing they were gone? To the six, board certified dermatologists at Windsor Dermatology, these growths are known as acrochordons or cutaneous tags. However, they are most commonly referred to our patients as skin tags.

Don’t worry if you have noticed these on your body because you are not alone. About one in four people will grow skin tags at some point in their lives. In fact, if you are 50 years old or older, you may be noticing an increase in skin tags. They occur in areas of friction. Some common spots we’ve noticed them are around the neck and under arms. Skin tags are genetic and obese people might notice large quantities of them.

Skin tags could pop up individually or in a small group. Although they are harmless, you do run the risk of irritation, inflammation, and bleeding by keeping them. It might be tempting to try to remove skin tags on your own, however, we strongly advise against that. Doing so will open yourself up to the risk of scarring and infection.

Here at Windsor Dermatology, our talented team of board certified dermatologists are capable of removing the skin growth. The procedure is very quick and requires the use of a local anesthetic and special scissors. Another option we use to remove skin tags is super freezing or heating the growth. The skin tag shouldn’t grow back in the same spot and there won’t be a mark left. Skin tags might pop up again elsewhere on your skin, but the procedure is very quick and can be repeated again.

No matter your skin care needs; Windsor Dermatology will solve your problem. We have an excellent team of six board certified dermatologists that takes pride in their work and strives for the highest quality care. Living with Psoriasis

Living with Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a non-contagious, chronic skin condition that affects 2% of the population. Although there is currently no cure for psoriasis, many effective treatments are available. We are proud to be home to the first complete psoriasis facility for advanced psoriasis clinical research in New Jersey. Receiving a psoriasis diagnosis can be scary and stressful, so we’ve provided you with some guidelines for how to move on from the diagnosis.

  1. Healthy diet & exercise. After receiving a psoriasis diagnosis, it is extremely important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The National Psoriasis Foundation discovered that obese psoriasis patients are more likely to suffer from a severe case. A tip is to start keeping a food diary to track what you are eating. If you find out that you aren’t eating as healthy as you should be, try to slowly incorporate healthier alternatives.
  2. Maintain low stress levels. Stress is a trigger for a psoriasis flare; to keep it at bay you should identify what exactly is stressing you out. Afterwards, you should come up with a plan of action to reduce the stressors’ impact. Try to include yoga, meditation, and deep-breathing exercises to maintain low stress levels.
  3. Create a treatment plan. Since we are home to the Psoriasis Treatment Center of Central New Jersey, we have a multitude of effective treatments available. We offer UV light and biologic therapies, as well as, oral medications. Dr. Jerry Bagel, a board certified dermatologist, is a nationally recognized expert in the treatment of psoriasis. Be sure to schedule an appointment with him to discuss creating and implementing a treatment plan.

Hyperhidrosis: What Is It & How Can It Be Treated?

Hyperhidrosis

Sweating is a normal part of life. It’s the body’s normal way to cool itself and maintain a healthy internal temperature. Usually, sweating occurs when people are in an environment that is too hot or during exercise. However, for some people sweating occurs without any trigger — and in quantities that are noticeable and even embarrassing. For some people, water marks may soak the underarm areas of their clothing even while they are resting comfortably. For others, it means their hands become drenched when they reach to shake hands. These people suffer from a condition known as hyperhidrosis.

There are two forms of hyperhidrosis. In focal primary focal hyperhidrosis, the areas affected are typically the axillae, palms, and soles. This form typically begins in adolescence. The second form, secondary generalized hyperhidrosis, is triggered by some other underlying medical condition.

Several effective treatments are available for hyperhidrosis. Prescription strength antiperspirants may provide significant relief. Injections with BOTOX are highly effective, long-lasting, and covered by most insurance. Oral medication is often effective. Tapwater iontophoresis is a drug-free, nonsurgical way to treat hyperhidrosis of the hands and feet. For the most severe cases, neurosurgery may be considered.

Effectively treatment for hyperhidrosis restores comfort and self-confidence. These are goals that Windsor Dermatology continually strives for when treating this and any other dermatological condition.

Psoriasis: More Than Just A Skin Condition

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic condition that causes itchy, red, raised lesions all over the body. It can also cause dry skin that may crack and bleed. Psoriasis can strike any age group. Most of all, it can be extremely embarrassing and cause a great amount of shame and discomfort. People that do not suffer from the every day skin condition do not truly understand the pain and discomfort that those with psoriasis have to go through.

Psoriasis is more than just a common skin condition. It is the cause of great discomfort for a number of people today. By medical standards, psoriasis is a chronic disease of the immune system; its condition can be considered mild to severe. Additionally, psoriasis may also be associated with other health ailments, such as psoriatic arthritis, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. While the exact causes of psoriasis are unknown, many scientists have hypothesized that the cause stems from genetics that result in immunologic abnormalities or simple environmental conditions, such as stress, medications, or injury to the skin.

While there are a variety of treatments that are available for psoriasis, due to the fact that it is a chronic condition, there is no cure. The treatments that are available, including clinical trials, are meant to make psoriasis an easier ailment to live with on a daily basis. Over and above the physical treatments that are available, it is important for a person suffering from psoriasis to be conscious of their diet, exercise and stress factor.

Conveniently located in East Windsor and serving patients throughout the state of New Jersey, Windsor Dermatology understands the struggles that patients diagnosed with psoriasis go through. We consider it to be one of the stapes of our dermatological business in the sense that our passion is to help patients as much as possible to combat psoriasis. What To Expect After Surgery To Remove Warts

When a person thinks of warts, they often think of something in fairy tales associated with an evil witch. How often have we seen in our culture a green wicked witch or character covered in black warts to enhance her unsightly features? The reality, however, is that many people often deal with the existence of warts somewhere on their body, usually in a place that is very obvious to see. Fortunately, today several wart treatment options are available. Here is an overview of what to expect.

The first option that a person has when it comes to wart removal is cryotherapy. This is a process in which the wart is actually frozen off of the skin. Many people have often heard of the over the counter freeze ointments that can be used for warts. However, this type of therapy is much stronger and more controlled then anything sold over the counter. It is important to note, however several treatments may be needed for complete clearance.

Another treatment option is to use an application of salicylic acid may reduce the buildup of dead skin. Cantharidin, which is administered in a physician’s office, stimulates a blistery reaction to eject the wart from the skin. The prescription medication imiquimod may stimulate the immune system to fight the virus, which causes warts. Finally when these treatments fail, laser surgery may be performed.

The physicians of Windsor Dermatology have worked with countless patients who have struggled with the existence of warts on various parts of the body. We will work with you to put together a surgery plan that will offer as little down time as possible but give you the optimum, wart free results that you are looking for. We understand that your comfort and time is of optimal importance and we will do the best that we can to adhere to all of your needs.
