The positive impact I have on people’s lives when I identify and treat their cancer or treat their rash or skin condition.

How do you feel watching Windsor Dermatology grow in the 30+ years the practice has been around?

We all know businesses don’t stick around unless you are doing something right. So when patients trust their family and friends with the care at Windsor Dermatology, we know we are helping the surrounding community.

How has the practice changed since you have started working here?

It continues to go stronger as we search for the best team members every day.

What is the latest update in psoriasis treatment and care?

There are so many new treatment options. No patient should suffer on their own. We can work with you to find your ideal treatment.

How do you suggest patients stay safe in the sun this spring and summer?

Skin Allergy Remedies for Children

There is nothing worse than watching your children in pain. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, children aged 0-4 are most likely to have skin allergies and over 8.8 million children have skin allergies. Here are some remedies to help assuage your children’s skin allergies:

  • Wipe drool off of your child’s face. If your baby’s skin is irritated, spit can be the culprit. Be sure to dry the drool off of their face to prevent irritation.
  • Use gentle soaps. Your child’s skin is very sensitive, for that reason use fragrance-free and dye-free cleansers and soaps when giving them a bath. This will protect skin and not dry it out.
  • Cut your children’s nails. Let’s face it, whenever we have an itch we want to scratch it. Keeping nails short will prevent cutting skin when scratching it.
  • Give your children shorter baths. Bath time can be a fun time to play in the tub, however, you should limit the amount of time your children spend in the bath. Ideally, you should use lukewarm water and take about 3 to 5 minutes to bathe them. Bubble baths can be fun, but for children with skin allergies you will need to skip them.
  • Moisturize post-bath. After giving your child a bath, pat their skin dry and apply an ointment or cream on the skin to retain its moisture.
  • Select cotton clothes. Cotton is one of the softest fabrics that children’s clothing is made in. It is the best option for children suffering from skin allergies as rougher fabrics can lead to itchy skin.
  • Treat infections. If you notice a skin infection on your child’s skin, call the trusty, board certified dermatologists at Windsor Dermatology.

Can Exercise Lower the Risk of Psoriasis?

Exercising for health benefits has been emphasized in the medical world for so many years. It has even been backed by researchers who have found increasing evidence to suggest that exercise can contribute to illness prevention and improve overall health. In fact, a study by scientists at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital found that one of the benefits of physical activity is it decreases women’s risk of developing psoriasis by 30%.

There is a catch, in order to reap the full benefits of the decreased psoriasis risk, women need to vigorously exercise. This means that women have to actively run for 105 minutes a week or participate in 180 minutes of other vigorous exercise per week to reap the health benefits.

The researchers’ finding is in line with exercise benefits on other systemic inflammation diseases including type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease, and certain types of cancer. Of course, patients with psoriasis might be concerned with exercising due to the skin condition. There are a few things you can do to prevent irritation:

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing to prevent friction.
  • Don’t scrub your skin post-exercising, take a gentle shower.
  • Apply a lubricant prior to working out in areas that you believe will become irritated.

  • Psoriasis has no cure. Unfortunately, psoriasis does not have a cure, however, it can be treated with different medications and therapies.
  • Flare-ups occur with stress. When patients undergo tremendous stress, psoriasis flare-ups can occur. It is important to remember that although it can be quite stressful experiencing a flare-up, try to remain calm and bring your stress levels down.

5 Tips for Living with Eczema

Eczema is a common skin condition that causes red, itchy, swollen skin. Although there is no cure for eczema, there are a few things that you can do to minimize the impact of it on your life.

  • Stay away from triggers. There are a variety of reasons patients might experience an eczema flare up. Try to stay cognizant as to what those triggers are and stay away from them. Eczema patients should definitely stay away from fragrant products. They should opt for unscented products without harsh chemicals.
  • Moisturize your skin. One of the best ways to minimize the appearance and effect of eczema is to moisturize your skin. We recommend to patients to put lotion on after showering, this will replace the moisture that was lost.
  • Try not to scratch. We know, eczema is extremely itchy. Although your instincts might be wanting you to itch your skin, try not to. Doing so will make you itch more, which can lead to damaging the skin and causing an infection. When your skin is itchy, try to use a cold compress and moisturize.
  • Wear cotton. Certain fabrics can irritate patients’ skin, so we recommend wearing cotton clothes. In addition, people with eczema should wash new clothes before they wear them to prevent irritation.
  • Stress causes flare-ups. Have you noticed that in times of stress, your skin seems itchier than ever? It’s true that when patients experience high levels of stress, their eczema flares-up. Try to limit stress levels by practicing yoga and meditation.

Get Ready for Valentine’s Day with Juvederm

Valentine’s Day is coming up and many of our patients will be heading out with their significant others. Have you been thinking about Juvederm to plump your lips up for the 14th? We’ve put together a guide of everything you should know about Juvederm to assuage your fears.

Juvederm is a non-allergenic injection that works well on any patient. If you are looking to receive Juvederm before a big date on Valentine’s Day, we recommend you book your appointment to be at least 2 days before the 14th. The reason being, Juvederm needs time to settle.

Before you are scheduled to come in for your appointment, ask your doctor about the medications you are taking. It is advised to stop taking any medicines that could prolong periods of bleeding, such as aspirin or ibuprofen. To minimize any pain experienced, your doctor might apply a numbing agent. This can be administered via a dental block or topical anesthetic.

The process of receiving Juvederm injections is relatively quick, it takes approximately 10-15 minutes. It works by mimicking the body’s natural connective tissue material called hyaluronic acid. During the injections, you might feel mild pinching. The treatment will last for about 6-9 months, as it does not stop dramatically, but fades away over time.

As Juvederm is non-allergic, you should not experience any serious side effects. Rather, you might experience swelling, mild pain, and redness at the injection site. Typically, those side effects should last for about two days.

No matter your skin care needs; Windsor Dermatology will solve your problem. Laser Hair Removal Tips

Unwanted hair can be pesky and an inconvenience to remove. If you are considering removing unwanted hair more permanently via laser hair removal, follow the tips below to prepare.

  • Select a board certified dermatologist. The best way to ensure a safe, effective procedure is to select a board-certified dermatologist to conduct laser hair removal. They have experience administering the treatment.
  • Consultation with the doctor. Before starting the procedure, you should schedule a consultation with the doctor set to perform it. This will help the doctor review medical history and explain the benefits of laser hair removal.
  • Avoid sun exposure. Once you have decided to undergo laser hair removal, you must avoid sun exposure. One of the risks of the procedure is skin lightening, having a tan will increase the risk of that side effect.
  • Do not pluck, wax, or receive electrolysis. You cannot pluck, wax, or receive electrolysis on the hair that you hope to remove with laser hair removal. The reason is that it will interfere with the procedure.
  • During the procedure. The doctor will prepare your skin before the procedure by applying a cooling gel. You will also need to wear goggles to protect your eyes. Depending on where you receive laser hair removal, it can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours.
  • Post-laser hair removal. It is normal to experience redness and swelling on the skin for a few hours after the procedure. It is important to stay out of the sun until your skin has healed.

How to Get Clear Skin

Does your skin feel dull and dry? Have you been noticing an increased amount of acne? Acne and dry skin can be extremely uncomfortable. Follow the tips below and you will be on your way to clear skin.

  • Wear sunscreen. If you don’t want a lot of wrinkles in the future, put sunscreen on every day. Preventive care is better than fixing the problem afterward. Winter is not an excuse not to wear sunscreen because the sun’s rays are just as strong.
  • Wash makeup brushes. Many people are guilty of not washing their makeup brushes. Not doing so is one of the easiest ways to cause breakouts, as the brushes hold dirt and bacteria.
  • Use an antioxidant-rich serum. Serums are different from lotions and creams; they are more concentrated so you’ll only need a small amount.
  • Clean your phone. Your smartphone gets so many germs on it throughout the day. It is a breeding ground for bacteria, viruses, and germs. The combination of that causes pimples and irritation. We recommend cleaning your phone a few times a day with a disinfecting wipe.
  • Get enough sleep. Sleep is one of the best things for your body. It gives it the chance to renew and recover from the day’s activities. Not getting enough sleep will leave your skin looking dull and pale.
  • Exfoliate your skin. If you’re looking in the mirror and wishing you had smaller pores, exfoliate your skin. The reason why your pores look bigger is because they are filled with dirt, dead skin cells, and oil. Exfoliating will help get rid of the gunk in your pores.
